PEACE STUDIES CENTER

About Us

Peace Studies Center (PSC) of the Myanmar Institute of Theology is a dedicated agency working to equip peacebuilders who promote peace, nonviolence, justice, human rights, freedom, and equity in Myanmar. Guided by our mission, we strengthen individual, institutional, and communal capacities to foster these values in today’s complex and challenging context.

At the heart of PSC’s work is our commitment to advancing peace through research and capacity-building. Our theme, “Strengthening Research and Capacity Building for Peacebuilding,” drives initiatives that include peace and human rights research and the development of innovative peacebuilding strategies. We conduct faith-based peacebuilding training, workshops on freedom of religion and peace, organizational development for peace-focused entities, and curriculum design for peace education.

PSC is committed to promoting peacebuilding, nonviolence, restorative justice, and reconciliation while advocating for equality and human dignity. Our programs empower local communities and faith-based organizations, equipping them to implement sustainable peace initiatives and strengthen organizational resilience. By focusing on research, education, and collaboration, PSC aims to be a catalyst for lasting peace and justice in Myanmar.

Overview of the Peace Studies Center

The Peace Studies Center (PSC) was established on July 13, 2006, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Maung Maung Yin, as one of the centers of the Myanmar Institute of Theology (MIT). PSC was founded with the vision of promoting peace in Myanmar’s diverse and complex context. Its objectives include fostering a deep understanding of peace, equipping individuals with conflict transformation and peacebuilding skills, advocating for human rights and human dignity, promoting nonviolence, and propagating the principles of restorative justice. Additionally, PSC strives to raise public awareness of peace through publications in both English and Burmese and to develop a comprehensive peace studies curriculum, culminating in the establishment of a master’s program in Peace Studies.

Over the years, PSC has conducted numerous peacebuilding workshops addressing topics such as conflict transformation, trauma healing, domestic violence, and human trafficking, across different regions of Myanmar. Programs like Peace and ArtMonsoon Bible StudyPeace Symposium, and Research Fellowships have been integral to PSC’s efforts, alongside the incorporation of peace studies into existing curricula and the publication of peace-related materials. In 2014, PSC launched the Master of Arts in Peace Studies program under MIT’s Liberal Arts Program, marking a significant milestone. PSC also initiated Training of Trainers (TOT) programs on conflict transformation and trauma healing, as well as Human Sexuality Seminars focusing on LGBTQ+ rights and related issues. By 2017, PSC had completed nine TOTs and four Human Sexuality workshops in regions such as Shan State, Chin State, and Kayah State, benefiting diverse ethnic and local communities.

On April 1, 2021, amidst the challenges of a global pandemic and political uncertainty, Saya Mana Tun became the center’s director. During this period, PSC adapted by conducting most of its programs online and other humanitarian activities. On November 1, 2022, Dr. Mai Aye Aye Aung assumed the role of director, introducing the theme “Strengthening Research and Capacity Building for Peacebuilding.” Under her leadership, PSC has focused on research in peace, human rights, freedom of religion or belief, and social cohesion. The center has also emphasized capacity building through initiatives such as faith-based peacebuilding training, peace strategy workshops, and organizational development programs.

In recent years, PSC has shifted its focus from merely delivering training to empowering faith-based organizations and local communities to achieve self-sufficiency. This includes building their capacity for fundraising, strengthening organizational development, and implementing sustainable activities that contribute to long-term societal peace. Through these efforts, PSC continues to serve as a transformative force, responding to the urgent needs of Myanmar’s ever-evolving landscape while nurturing hope, justice, and peace.
