GENDER STUDIES CENTER
Background
Gender Studies Center (GSC) of MIT has been operating after 2008 in Myanmar to advocate gender equality in the churches and communities in Myanmar. Promoting human dignity and rights of women, GSC has been working with the churches and agencies such as DCA, CA, LWF and Act Church of Sweden through gender development initiatives. In 2006-2007 Academic year, the gender studies subject was introduced to the Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies (BARS), Liberals Arts Program (LAP). In 2010, under the leadership of Dr. Anna May Say Pa and Social Studies Department (LAP) department, the Gender Studies text book was published due to the current need. From 2012, MIT cooperated with NCA three-year project named “Breaking the Silence”. The main purpose of the project is to publish the curriculum on “Breaking the Silence” and to introduce it to theological schools and students in Myanmar. In 2012 the text book “Breaking the Silence: Power, Gender and Violence” was published and hence an elective course based this text book was offered to M.Div. students also to other Bible schools. With the need of the community in Myanmar, the project extended its work to conduct some advocacy and awareness workshops. In 2014-2015, MIT Board of Trustee conducted a consultation to launch as a Studies Center. After that, Gender Studies Center was founded on 23 January 2016 at Myanmar Institute of Theology. In 2017, GSC is partnership with Act Church of Sweden on 10-year project named “Promoting Gender Equality in the Faith-based Organizations Project” (2017-2027). The birth of Gender Studies Center in MIT, gender studies and theology, gender awareness trainings and campaigns are empowered to build gender justice in Myanmar. Certificate in Gender Studies is offered every year in Summer for those who would like to learn basic gender studies. The Center launched MA program named Master of Arts in Gender Studies (MAGS) on 7 January 2023 to offer advanced gender studies in academic program of Myanmar Institute of Theology.
